The Live Fire Shoot House Project on Pelham Range in Alexandria, AL earns an honor from Contractors Association

Birmingham, Ala. (Jan 15, 2016) – Hurst Construction, LLC today announced that the company received honors from the Alabama Associated General Contractors (AGC) during a recent awards ceremony. AGC presented BuildSouth awards in 13 categories, of which one project constructed by Hurst Construction, LLC was cited for excellence.

The project awarded was The Live Fire Shoot House on Pelham Range in Alexandria, AL.

“We owe this honor to our project teams, subcontractors, and clients for their roles in these outstanding projects,” said Hurst Construction, Owner Todd Hurst.

Hurst Construction was the general contractor of the Live Fire Shoot House Facility. It is compiled of seven individual buildings and a Flat Range that features a 100 Meter Firing Range with 14 firing lanes. The project consisted of construction of a covered mess shelter, ammunition breakdown building, bleacher enclosure, live fire shoot house mock-up, live fire shoot house facility, after action review & operation/storage building and a sniper tower. The lead architect for JMR+H Architecture is quoted saying, “This project is a hybrid live fire training facility belonging to the Alabama Army National Guard and is first of its kind to have been constructed in the United States.”  Some of the project features include the use of Dura Panels (a bullet absorbing material that removes the hazards of ricochet). The floors were designed and constructed with eleven inches of lightweight concrete in order to provide extra thickness for strength in preventing penetrations, eliminating the extreme weights of regular concrete. Phil Webb, Owner, Webb Concrete states, “We found Hurst Construction very detailed oriented and attentive to the special demands that pouring  Light Weight Concrete brings about. Light Weight Concrete is often misunderstood and sometimes creates challenges on the project site.” Part of the requirement for this project was to achieve LEED certification, especially for Building #6.  “Hurst Construction, LLC showed discipline and attention to detail regarding LEED practices for this project that was designed to be a LEED Silver Project. They played a vital role in ensuring that LEED silver will be achieved”, per Michael Rutland, JMR+H Architecture

Hurst Construction met all the adversities and challenges of this 5.2 million dollar project by working closely in design aid with National Guard personnel, the architect, and engineers in order to complete this project. This facility will be a valuable asset to the National Guard personnel for many years to come.
